A narrow escape from drowning fell to the lot of Theodore C., the 12-year-old son of Auburn police Officer Ratcliffe, yesterday afternoon. He among others was skating on the Little Androscoggin below Barker Mill dam. Unconscious to the danger, he started to cross a piece of ice which would not bear him, and went through. A fellow named Haridon, about 18 years old, saw him fall in and went to the rescue. Crawling out to the edge on his belly he caught hold of young Ratcliffe and proceeded to haul him out. When Officer and Mrs. Ratcliffe returned home at about five o’clock their promising son had been there, changed his clothes and gone skating again.

Water damage was caused to all floors of the Air-Tred Shoes Corp. building at 121 Main St., Auburn, last night and firemen were still there early today carrying out mopping up operations. Firemen were called to the scene when a passerby thought he saw smoke coming from the building. Firemen and police said this was steam coming from the boiler room. A water pipe broke on an upper floor of the three-story factory, and water ran down through the plant.

Norstar Bank will begin shuttling employees between its operations center at 1155 Lisbon St., Lewiston, and a parking lot three-quarters of a mile away within the next few weeks. Located near the intersection of Pleasant and Lisbon streets, the off-premises parking lot will be able to handle about 100 cars. The bank envisions the service running continuously during the workday with the first of two 14-passenger vans arriving at 7 or 7:30 a.m.
