JAY/LIVERMORE FALLS — Staff at RSU Spruce Mountain Adult Education are busy planning the course offerings for spring 2013. Most classes will begin later in the semester. However, to enroll in the following classes students will need to contact the adult education office at 897-6384 between Jan. 7 and 10 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Adult Basic Education and GED preparation: These classes begin the week of Jan. 14 and include math, English, social studies, science review and a writing workshop. English as a second language and Spruce Mountain New Readers Book Club are also scheduled to begin at this time.

The GED test will change in December. Anyone who has already started the GED testing process will need to complete it before December or they will be required to restart the entire assessment process. This means that those who do not pass by Dec. 31 will have to take all parts again.

Legal certificate courses: Spruce Mountain Adult and Community Education will work with The Center for Legal Studies to offer six online classes. For more information or to register call Spruce Mountain Adult and Community Education at 897-6384 or call the Center for Legal Studies at 1-800-522-7737. Students must have access to high speed Internet and a printer. All courses require additional textbook purchase. Certificate courses include: paralegal certificate, advanced paralegal, legal investigation, alternative dispute resolution and victim advocacy. Session 1 will run Jan. 14-March 1; Session 2, March 11-April 26.

Get Ready to Attend College: New classes are specifically designed to prepare adults to enter college. The College Access program is funded though a FAME College Access grant and includes free classes in college ready English, math and computer. A class in understanding and completing financial aid forms and college applications is also included. If you have always wanted to attend college but thought you could use a little help to brush up on your skills first, give Adult Ed a call at 897-6384.

This class is held on Wednesdays from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. beginning Jan. 16 and is offered at no cost through a regional Adult Education partnership that includes Mt. Blue, Turner and Spruce Mountain.

Zumba: This class will combine exercises with high-energy cardio work and Latin-infused moves to create a calorie torching, strength training dance fitness party. The class is held at the Livermore Elementary Gym on Gibbs Mills Road, Tuesdays, Jan. 15 through Feb. 26, from 4 to 5 p.m. Class has a minimum of 10 students and maximum of 25. Cost is $60.

Yogalates: Yogalates is a combination of traditional yoga and Pilates. It combines breathe, a mind body connection, gentle stretching and isometric holding poses to increase strength. Yogalates is a “joint friendly” exercise ideal for those wishing to increase strength without the “pounding” effects of traditional classes. Instructor is Tricia Thomas. Class is held at Spruce Mountain Middle School library for six Mondays beginning Jan. 28 from 5 to 5:45 p.m. Min/max: 10/15. Cost, $60.

Nutrition: Have you ever wondered about what you eat and how it affects your body? If so, this class is for you. Discussion on caloric needs, calculating BMR and activity, maintaining weight, losing weight, calories in, calories out, reading labels, portion sizes, good fat vs. bad fat, exercise for increasing muscular strength and understanding the glycemic index. Instructor, Tricia Thomas. Class will take place from 6 to 6:45 p.m. Mondays, Jan. 28 though March 11, at Spruce Mountain Middle School library. Min/max: 10/15. Cost, $60.

Enroll immediately to attend Central Maine Community College classes offered at Spruce Mountain High Schools and credits toward a college degree. Eng101-F1 College Writing will be offered Thursdays beginning Jan. 17 from 6 to 8:55 p.m. at Spruce Mountain South. HIS 132-F1 US History since 1865 will be offered Thursdays beginning Jan. 17 from 5:30 to 8:25 p.m. at Spruce Mountain North.
