AUBURN — Richard A. Rosenberg, noted director and actor in many plays at Community Little Theatre, will direct “God of Carnage” by Yasmina Reza with translation by Christopher Hampton. Originally performed in France and London, it opened to rave reviews there, winning the Lawrence Olivier Award. On Broadway, it was a smash hit, winning three Tony Awards in 2009. The show will be presented February 8-17 at CLT.

The story follows two couples, the Novaks and the Raleighs, who meet in the Novak living room to discuss a recent fight between their two 11-year-old sons, Henry Novak and Benjamin Raleigh. (The children are not in the play.) Young Benjamin has struck Henry with a stick, knocking out two teeth, injuring a nerve to the right incisor and swelling his upper lip. The mood is serious, friendly and tolerant in the beginning, but quickly disintegrates into pettiness and gutter language as the adults regress to their juvenile ways. The result is quick, explosive and dramatic.

Rosenberg has been in rehearsal with his cast for the past month. He has selected veteran actors well known to CLT and other theaters for this challenging play. He has cast Mark Hazard and Cheryl Reynolds to play Alan and Annette Raleigh opposite Roger Philippon and Michelle Vasquez-Jacobus as Michael and Veronica Novak.

Celeste Philippon, also a veteran director, assists Rosenberg. The production cast includes Stefanie Lynn, producer; Brandon Chaloux, stage manager and props; Rachel Morin, publicist; Carole Hodgkin, set décor; Derek Johnson, sound design; Richard Martin, light design; Gerry Therrien, lead set construction with Phil Vampatella; Jacynthe Jacques, lobby photographer; and Heather Lea, hair/makeup.

Tickets are $18 and $15. Reserve seats by calling 207-783-0958 or visit www.laclt.com. Performances are at Great Falls Performing Arts Center, 30 Academy St., Auburn.
