FARMINGTON — The University of Maine-Farmington men’s basketball team knocked off Bowdoin for the first time since 1999 in a 66-62 win over Bowdoin on Tuesday evening.

The win snaps a 15-game losing streak for the Beavers (11-3) against the Polar Bears. Bowdoin falls to 9-4 this season with the loss.

Ben Johnson had 19 points and10 rebounds to lead Farmington. Keegan Pieri had 15 points and six rebounds for Bowdoin. Andrew Madlinger pitched in 14 and Lucas Hausman had 13 points off the bench for the Polar Bears.

The Polar Bears held a six point lead at intermission, 30-24, and extended their lead to as many as 13 points early in the second half, 47-34, with 14:53 remaining. UMF closed the gap to a single point with a 14-2 surge, to close within a single point, 49-48, with 7:43 to go.

Salve Regina 76, Wentworth 67

BOSTON — Junior guard Isiah Pringle paced Salve Regina with a game high 20 points as the Seahawks were victorious Tuesday night over Commonwealth Coast Conference foe Wentworth 76-67.

William Smiley finished the game with 17 points while chipping in nine rebounds.

Junior Derek Mayo was the high scorer for the Leopards pouring in 19 points while registering a game high five assists.

Salve Regina would end the half on a 13-2 run, capped by a Patrick Dinneen 3-pointer to extend the lead to 41-24. The Seahawks were paced by a strong performance from Smiley, who poured in 13 of 17 points in the first half. Wentworth was led by senior Corey Therriault of Auburn and Mayo, who both registered six points in the first frame.

USM 64, UMass-Boston 58

GORHAM — Junior guard Conor Sullivan scored a game-high 16 points to lead the University of Southern Maine Huskies to a 64-58 win over the UMass-Boston Beacons in the Little East Conference men’s basketball at Hill Gymnasium on Tuesday.

In a tightly contested game, Southern Maine trailed the Beacons 29-26 at the half and were behind UMass Boston through the first eight minutes of the second stanza. The Beacons led Southern Maine 35-26 with 16:37 to play after opening the second half with a 6-0 run on baskets from sophomore guard Vinny DeLucia, freshman guard Jahleel Moise and junior forward Rahshjeem Benson. Conversely, USM opened the second half missing its first four shots and turning the ball over once. After Benson’s jumper from the top of the key, for the Beacons 35-36 lead, Southern Maine rallied over the next six and a half minutes with a game-changing 18-7 run to secure its first lead since the midway point of the first half (14-12, 12:22).

Women’s basketball

USM 70, UMass-Boston 54

GORHAM — Four players in double figures as No. 13 University of Southern Maine Huskies defeated the UMass Boston Beacons 70-54 in a Little East Conference women’s basketball game at Hill Gymnasium on Tuesday.

Senior forward Jordan Grant led all scorers with 21 points. Senior guard Nicole Garland had 15 points, while sophomore forward Rebecca Knight tossed in 14 points and grabbed a team-high nine rebounds. Senior guard Haley Jordan added 10 points.

Bowdoin 70, Husson 29

BANGOR — The Bowdoin College women’s basketball team bounced back from consecutive losses with a dominating 70-29 road win at Husson on Tuesday evening.

Every player scored for the Polar Bears, who improve to 8-6 with the victory. Husson falls to 4-9 with the loss. Kirsten Prue led the way for Bowdoin with 10 points. Four other players scored nine points, including Kaitlin Donahoe, Shannon Brady, Siena Mitman and Megan Phelps. Brady also had eight rebounds and two blocks for the Polar Bears while Donahoe had six rebounds and four assists.

UNE 63 ENC 40

BIDDEFORD — Trailing 29-28 at the break, the University of New England women’s basketball team limited Eastern Nazarene College to 11 second-half points on its way to a 63-40 Commonwealth Coast Conference at the Harold Alfond Forum on Tuesday

The victory was the fourth straight for the Nor’easters, who retain the top spot in the conference standings with an unblemished 7-0 mark (10-4 overall). The Lions fall to 7-6, 3-4 in league play.

Sophomore Kelly Coleman scored 17 points and grabbed six rebounds to lead the way for UNE. Senior Beth Suggs recorded her ninth double-double with 13 points and 11 boards. She also had three of Big Blue’s 15 steals. Senior Liz LeBlanc of Jay came off the bench to score nine points in 12 minutes.

St. Joe’s 74, Simmons 46

STANDISH — St. Joseph’s College (8-6, 2-1 GNAC) toppled Simmons College (2-10, 0-2 GNAC), 74-46, in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) women’s basketball contest at the Harold Alfond Center on Tuesday night.

Senior guard Danyelle Shufelt netted a game-high 20 points, including 18 in the first half, in the one-sided triumph.

The Monks led for the duration and utilized a 24-2 run early in the opening stanza to secure control of the contest.

Bowdoin 4, USM 1

GORHAM — The sixth-ranked Bowdoin College Polar Bears women’s ice hockey team received goals from four different players en route to a 4-1 victory over the University of Southern Maine Huskies in non-conference action Tuesday night at the USM Ice Arena.

Senior Kayte Holtz, rookie Rachel Kennedyand senior Kim Tess-Wanat each had a goal and an assist to lead the Polar Bears’ offense. Senior Stephanie Ludy had the other Bowdoin goal. Senior Kailey Bubier of Auburn had the Huskies lone goal.

Bowdoin 4, USM 1

GORHAM — The Bowdoin College women’s ice hockey team extended its unbeaten streak to 13 with tonight’s 4-1 win over University of Southern Maine and is off to its best start since the 2002-03 season.

Kayte Holtz, Rachel Kennedy and Kim Tess-Wanat each had a goal and an assist to lead the Polar Bears’ offense. Stephanie Ludy added another Bowdoin goal.
