Art Club to meet Jan. 21

AUBURN — The Auburn Art Club will meet at 2 p.m. Monday, Jan. 21, at the Park Avenue Methodist Church. The speaker will be Nancy Trider, a local artist who has worked in several mediums including oils, pastels and pen/ink.

Trider finds that watercolor, and more recently oil, enable her to reflect Maine living with an unusual perception for detail. She is a member of the Western Maine Plein Aire Group. She has studied with Irene Duplissis and is currently working with Mike Ranucci on old world oil painting methods. Her work has been shown throughout Maine, New Hampshire, Illinois, Nevada and California. She was accepted as a member of Oil Painters of America in 2011.

Melanie Ness is chairman of the committee for this meeting and will be assisted by Jean Ness, Jean Hathorne and Joan Libby.

Knee injury is program topic

LEWISTON — If knee pain is keeping you from skiing, running, playing tennis or enjoying any of your favorite sports, join Dr. Bruce Hamilton-Dick, an orthopaedic surgeon with St. Mary’s Center for Orthopaedics, for a free seminar about athletic related knee injuries. Hamilton-Dick will explain ways to prevent knee injuries, signs of a serious knee injury and treatment options.

This free presentation will take place on Tuesday, Jan. 22, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., in the Lepage Large Conference Room, 99 Campus Ave.

Hebron Hist. to meet Jan. 22

HEBRON — James Greene, director of operations of Goodwill Industries of New England, will speak to the Hebron Historical Society about its history and the assistance it provides to local residents. The program will be held at the town office at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Jan 22. The public is invited.

All aspects of Goodwill’s operation to include donation procedures and the benefits of giving and purchasing recycled goods will be detailed and followed by a question and answer period.

Habitat board meeting is Jan. 23

LEWISTON — The monthly board meeting to discuss the business transactions of Androscoggin Habitat for Humanity, its plans for upcoming events and how we can meet the rising need for homes in Androscoggin County will be held at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 23, at South Lewiston Baptist Church, 1919 Lisbon Road.

Mechanic Falls Hist. meeting

MECHANIC FALLS — Lucille Hodsdon and Noella Hemond, members of the Minot Historical Society, will be guest speakers at the Mechanic Falls Historical Society on Wednesday, Jan. 23.

Hodson and Hemond will discuss the series of books they have created and published which deals with the early history of Minot. These books detail the recorded history of Minot as well as the early families of Auburn, Mechanic Falls and Poland when this region was known as Bakerstown.

Their presentation will begin at the 6:30, followed by the regular business session. Efforts to renovate the society’s building will be the center of discussion. The meeting will be held downstairs in the Congregational Hall of the society’s building on 64 Elm St. Refreshments will be served.

Benefit dance for Denise Hebert

AUBURN — A benefit dance for Denise Hebert of Lewiston will be held at 6 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 24, at Club Texas, 150 Center St.

Denise is a line dance instructor and has worked for 33 years at K-Mart in Auburn.

Bartending course planned

AUBURN — The Corporate and Community Services Department at Central Maine Community College will offer a bartending course Wednesday evenings, Jan. 30 through April 3, from 6 to 9 p.m. The cost is $350 and includes all materials.

Students will learn the basics of professional bartending and mixology and its application in restaurants, clubs and function facilities. This class also includes the Maine Course, a six-hour seminar in the responsible service of alcohol as required by the State of Maine Liquor Commission and the Department of Human Services.

Ricker Library 50th anniversary

POLAND — The Alvin Bolster Ricker Memorial Library will begin a year-long celebration of its 50th anniversary. There will be 12 interesting monthly programs through the year that are at no cost and are open to the public.

The Saturday, Jan. 26, event will be a retrospective of Jane Ricker, the wife of A.B. Ricker. It was written and will be presented by Claire Walker, who was a good friend of Jane Ricker. Teen music workshop

LEWISTON — The Patrick Dempsey Center for Cancer Hope & Healing is offering a free music workshop for teens impacted by cancer. “What’s Your Beat?” will take place from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday, Jan. 28, at the Dempsey Center, 29 Lowell St.

The workshop, facilitated by Ellen Bowman, licensed clinical professional counselor, and Tookie Bright, licensed master social worker and children’s program coordinator, will allow participants a chance to explore the colors and powers of rhythm. After a live drumming performance and pizza dinner participants will create and decorate personalized drums for a drumming finale. Registration is limited to 10.

Lung Assoc. Beer & Bikes

LEWISTON — DaVinci’s will host the first American Lung Association Beer & Bikes for the Trek Across Maine from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 31, at 150 Mill St.

The event will include food, beer, trivia, prizes and fun. American Lung Association staff members will answer questions about the Trek Across Maine.

Each June, for almost three decades, the American Lung Association of the Northeast has hosted the annual trek, the organization’s largest fundraiser nationwide. The 29th annual Trek Across Maine runs from June 14-16. The Trek covers 180 miles over three days.
