BANGOR – A New Sharon man was sentenced in federal court Wednesday on charges he stole firearms from a home in Jay.

Roger Briscoe, 34, was sentenced in United States District Court in Bangor to 27 months in prison and three years of supervised release for possessing 19 stolen firearms.

Briscoe pleaded guilty to the charge Oct. 10, 2012, court officials said.

Court records reveal that on Jan. 26, 2012, Briscoe broke into a Jay home and stole 19 firearms, including six semiautomatic rifles, five semiautomatic pistols and numerous shotgun.

Prosecutors said Briscoe took the firearms to his home several miles away. Most of the guns were recovered at Briscoe’s residence within 24 hours when police searched the home with a warrant.

The investigation was conducted by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the Jay Police Department.

U.S. Attorney Thomas E. Delahanty II praised the cooperative effort of the federal agents and Jay police officers for the swift recovery of the guns, which he noted prevented them from being used in other criminal activity.
