William Scolnik
1913 – 2013

LEWISTON — William Scolnik, a lifelong resident of Lewiston, died in Auburn on Jan. 22.  He was 99 years old. William was amiable, circumspect, staunch in his support of the principles of Judaism and a fixture at Bates College athletic events.  A dependable source of moral support for the Boston Red Sox, he was generous about their frequent disappointments.

William’s parents were Kalman and Mary Scolnik, each of whom immigrated to Lewiston in the early years of the last century.  Like his brothers, Samuel and Edward, he was a graduate of Bates College, in his case with the Class of 1935. During such time as he was away from Lewiston, he worked as a buyer for Filenes in various offices, a buyer for Wanamaker’s in New York and Philadelphia and as a buyer for R. H. White in Boston.  William was a veteran of World War II, serving in the United States Army.

His brothers were his only siblings and both predeceased him, as did his parents. His most immediate relatives are his nephews, Stephen Scolnik of Potomac, Maryland, and Louis Scolnik, of West Palm Beach, Florida. Among his cousins are Justice Louis Scolnik, now of Andover, Massachusetts, Ruben Scolnik and Hilda Scolnik of Houston, Texas, and Estelle Friedlander of Pompano Beach, Florida.

William was a member of Temple Shalom of Auburn, Maine.
