LIVERMORE FALLS — A Fayette man faces charges of drunken driving and failing to stop for an officer after an incident early Sunday morning on Haines Corner Road, police Chief Ernest Steward Jr. said Monday.

Officer Joe Sage arrested Travis Williams, 30, on charges of failure to stop for a police officer, operating under the influence with one prior, driving to endanger, failure to notify of a vehicle accident and operating a vehicle while license was suspended or revoked, Steward said.

Sage saw a vehicle driving erratically on Haines Corner Road at a high rate of speed at about 1:40 a.m. It was in the left lane and coming toward the police cruiser. Sage turned his cruiser around to follow it and saw it had hit some mailboxes and gone through an intersection without stopping, Steward said.

Sage put on the cruiser’s lights and tried to keep the vehicle in sight, but it kept accelerating more on the slick road. He followed it for 1.9 miles and eventually found it had hit a tree in Fayette, Steward said.

The Kennebec County Sheriff’s Department was called to take care of the accident with the tree, he said.

Sage arrested Williams and transported him to the Androscoggin County Jail in Auburn. His bail was set at $560 cash, Steward said.

A corrections officer at the jail said Williams was released at about 8:15 a.m. Sunday.

Residents of Haines Corner Road reported mailboxes missing or hit on Sunday, Steward said.
