100 years ago, 1913
It was Lewiston Day before the committee on appropriations and financial affairs this afternoon at the state house in Augusta and a goodly crowd of residents of that city were present at the hearings, which included resolves in favor of the Healey Asylum, St. Mary’s General Hospital, the Girls’ Orphanage and the Lewiston and Auburn Children’s Home. Senator Morey presented the cause of the Healey Asylum, asking for funds to procure a modern heating apparatus and to build a laundry. “There are in this institution,” he said, “an average of 195 boys whose age range from three to 14 years. This asylum has existed for about 20 years and it has thus far cost the state four cents and two mills a day for each boy. Now the institution asks that the state give it seven cents a day for each boy.”

50 years ago, 1963
A Lewiston boy crashed into the side of a car early Saturday afternoon while sledding on Willow Street. The seven-year-old boy is a patient at St. Mary’s General Hospital where X-ray pictures will be taken. He suffered friction burns but apparently was not seriously hurt. Police said the boy rode his sled out of a driveway and struck the rear wheel of a passing car.

25 years ago, 1988
A member of the Andy Valley Olympic School of Gymnastics has again attained lofty status in United States rankings. Rodney Gendron, 14, the son of George and Diane Gendron of the Pond Road, Lewiston, placed fourth in the entire United States during recent testing held at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo.. This marks the third straight year Gendron has earned a berth on the Junior National Team.
