LEWISTON —  Special events at The Center for Wisdom’s Women in February include a field trip to the Atrium Gallery at USM LA College to see the biennial Area Artists exhibit on Feb. 13. The group will be leaving the center at 9:45 and returning at noon.

The Full Moon Singing Circle meets next at 6 p.m. Monday, Feb. 26. Come sing to nurture your spirit. No experience needed; you do not even need to read music. Hot tea will be provided. Bring a munchie to share if you can.

On Thursday, Feb. 28, the center will show the documentary “Education Under Fire.” The film is about the persecution of the Baha’i people in Iran. It will be shown twice, at noon and 1:30, with discussion after each showing. It connects a diverse audience to a grave human rights issue, a powerful story of resilience against oppression and the need to respect human rights everywhere. Parivash Rohani and friends will be present to talk about their experiences and answer questions. Feel free to come during lunch hour and bring a lunch. Hot beverages will be available. Two Valentine activities are planned, card making at 1 p.m. Feb. 11 and a craft at 10 a.m. Feb. 12. A Valentine breakfast party is planned for 9 a.m. Feb. 14. The center will be closed that afternoon in order to participate in the local One Billion Rising activities throughout the afternoon. One Billion Rising is an international effort to raise awareness about violence against women and to encourage advocacy and action toward its end.

The center will also be closed on Friday, Feb. 15, in order to host its annual “We Love our Volunteers” brunch. In 2013 an average of 22 volunteers each month gave 2,428 hours as front desk hosts, Companions, group leaders and teachers. All who volunteered in 2013 are invited to attend. The Nutrition Center of Maine will cater the meal.

New classes in February include one on how to make your own laundry detergent on Feb. 19 and a discussion about living on a tight budget on Feb. 21. Both programs will take place at 1 p.m.

Several support groups meet regularly at the center. The Fibromyalgia support group is scheduled for 1 p.m. on Thursdays, Feb. 10 and 24. A weekly Al-Anon group meets on Wednesdays at 12:15. Local addiction counselor Lise Pelletier will come for her monthly conversation on addiction and co-dependency on Feb. 8 at 10 a.m.

The Art Van will make its monthly visit at 10 a.m. Feb. 27 and the monthly cooking class with Denise Dill is set for 10 a.m. Feb. 19. Another cooking event is a Pretzel Cafe on the afternoon of Feb. 5. The Writer’s Workshop meets on Monday mornings, and the watercolor painting class with Dot Treadwell is planned for 10 a.m. on Feb. 7 and 21. The center will be closed in observance of President’s Day on Feb. 18.

All women are welcome and no appointments are needed. Programs are offered free of charge. The center has personal hygiene items and winter gear to give away. Oatmeal breakfasts are available daily and the center has a shower available for use. Donations of gloves and full size shampoo/conditioner, deodorant, lotion and toothpaste are needed and welcomed.
