MEXICO — Millicent M. Mann, 97, died peacefully Wednesday, Feb. 6, with her family by her side at her residence on Howard Street in Mexico.

She was born in Perth Andover, N.B., Canada, Dec. 16, 1915, the daughter of Frank and Rowena (Murchison) Plant. She graduated from Mexico High School, Class of 1933, and graduated from Farmington State Normal School, Class of 1935, with her degree in education.

Prior to her marriage, Millicent taught school in Byron and Roxbury and in Mexico sixth-grade for many years until 1940 and in the 1950s she returned to teaching kindergarten at the Abbott School in Mexico until her retirement in 1976.

She was a member of the Mexico Congregational Church and since 1976 she had been very active for the American Cancer Society. She was a member of Town and Country Garden Club, where she was very active and served two terms as president. Member of the Rumford Hospital Auxiliary, member of the Retired Teachers Association, member of the AARP.

In years past, she had been involved on the Mexico Planning Board and Community Development and the Mexico Area Beautification. She was a Charter Member of the Mexico Historical Society; 2005 Volunteer of the Year for the town of Mexico; 1999 Volunteer of the Year for the River Valley Chamber of Commerce and 1996 Clarabell Q Connard Award for the American Cancer Society.

She was married in Mexico, May 30, 1940, to William Walter Mann, who died in Rumford, Feb. 11, 1992.

Survivors include a daughter, Deborah Martin and husband, David, of Burkeville, Texas; sons, W. Kent Mann of Mexico, Christopher Mann and his wife, Randee, of Granada Hills, Calif., Michael Mann and wife, Beverly, of Mexico; Millicent was a very proud grandmother of seven and they are, Kent Mann and his wife, Monia, of South Berwick, Michele Hobson of Rumford, Heather Mann and her companion, Scott Tibbetts, of Durham, Karen Mann and her companion, Arthur Allen, of Peru, John Randolph Mann and his wife, Holly, of Henderson, Colo., Eric Mulkern and his wife, Michelle, of Chillicothe, Ohio, and Aaron Dawson of Mexico; and 20 great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by two sons, Franklin Kirke in 1950 and David Brent Mann in 1998.
