LEWISTON — The YWCA of Central Maine is introducing its “Brave Girls” career exploration program for girls in grades 2-5. Girls will have an opportunity to meet local women at their place of work to find out what they do, where they find support and how they have found the courage to follow their dreams. This program is designed to challenge girls to think beyond the traditional stereotypes of what a girl or woman “should” be or do.
Brave Girls will meet on the first weekend of the month from March to June. Girls will have the opportunity to pick the session(s) that they which to attend. Each session costs $8 per girl or $5 per Girl Scout if attending with a troop.
In March the girls will meet Gabrielle Russell, an Auburn native and architect who will take them on a walking tour to view Lewiston’s historical buildings. In April they travel to Nezinscot Farm in Turner to meet Gloria Varney, owner and organic farmer.
In May they will meet Tammie Grieshaber, photographer and curator of the Lyceum gallery. In June, forest ranger Verla Brooks of Beaver Park in Lisbon will take them through the park and show what it is like to be a park ranger caring for animals and nature.
