Adaptive Sports receives grant
NEWRY — Maine Adaptive Sports and Recreation was awarded $500 from the Harvard Pilgrim Foundation’s Community Spirit 9/11 Mini-Grant program.
A Harvard Pilgrim Health Care employee nominated the organization, which provides year-round adaptive recreation programs for adults and children with physical disabilities. The grant will help support the organization’s skiing program.
The Harvard Pilgrim Community Spirit 9/11 Mini-Grant Program was created to honor the men and women lost on Sept. 11, 2001 by giving Harvard Pilgrim employees an annual opportunity to support organizations in their local communities.
Texas hold ’em Feb. 16 at Legion
RUMFORD — A Texas hold ’em tournament will take place Saturday, Feb. 16, at the American Legion on Congress Street. Buy in is $50.

Alzheimer’s care givers

Social Security workshop
RUMFORD — The Patrick Dempsey Center for Cancer Hope & Healing is offering a free workshop for anyone interested in learning more about Social Security benefits. The session will take place Wednesday, Feb. 20, from 3 to 4 p.m. at Rumford Hospital.
Joshua Lyons, claims representative, Social Security Administration, will offer a general overview of Social Security Income and Social Security Disability Income including qualifications, guidelines and how to apply.

Rumford Historical Society meeting
RUMFORD — The Rumford Historical Society will hold its regular monthly meeting at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 20, in the Rumford Auditorium in the Municipal Building, 145 Congress St.
The business meeting will be followed with a presentation by Catherine Johnson, director of the Hope School in Rumford. She will present a program on the history of this program for the mentally challenged individuals in the community.
This school has been in existence since the 1960s and it currently holds their daily activities in the old “Armory” building at the corner of Lincoln Avenue and Hancock. They also sponsor a greenhouse in the spring with seedlings for sale to the general public, and a thrift shop with clothing and articles for sale. Rhonda Shaw has written a book on the history of this organization, and it will be available for purchase at the meeting.
Light refreshments will be served following the presentation.
The meeting is open to the public, and new members are always welcome. All persons attending are asked to use the River Street entrance, by the Police Dept., to enter and exit the building.
