CUMBERLAND — A major car crash on Interstate 295 near mile marker 12 temporarily closed both southbound lanes Friday morning for at least 90 minutes.

Maine State Police spokesman Steve McCausland said one lane re-opened just after 9 a.m. The crash involved 19 cars.

“State Police say the chain reaction crash started when a car spun out in the southbound lane,” McCausland said in a press release. Five other vehicles hit that first car and 13 other vehicles were also pulled into the crash.

“Traffic then backed up for miles until a number of wreckers were able to clear the roadway,” he said.

Clean-up took almost four hours. One person taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Speed has been reduced on the length of 295 to 40 mph. Other crashes were also reported between Kennebunk and Saco, according to McCausland.
