FARMINGTON — Old love letters. Fabulous food. A live band playing jazz and swing. Put them together and you have the Farmington Grange’s celebration of Valentine’s Day on Saturday, Feb. 16, from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Grange Hall in West Farmington.
“We are harkening back to the times when Victory Gardens were the all the rage and when people wrote love letters,” said Grange members Marion Scharoun and Patti Millette, who will be cooking up recipes from the era in the Grange’s new kitchen.
“We have boxes of old love letters sent when stamps were three cents,” says Scharoun before reading a snippet from a letter her college student mother sent to her father, in basic training, on Dec. 8, 1941: “Darling, if I could only touch your hand or hear your voice close to my ear…”
The letters will be on the dining tables for all to read. Dances of the era will be taught by experts. Music of the era will be played by the South Strong Road Crew. The cost is $15 and reservations are required. Email patti.millette@Maine.edu.
