LIVERMORE — Selectpersons voted unanimously Tuesday to accept a settlement from an insurance company representing a Jay logger who cut about 10 acres on town land without permission.
The town will be compensated $40,690, which represents the value of the trees removed from Memorial Forest in 2012, the cost of a property line survey and the cost of the timber valuation, town Administrative Assistant Kurt Schaub said after the meeting.
The $40,690 is what the town demanded of logger John Korhonen, not including attorney fees, for the timber trespass.
Acadia Insurance will also pay an additional amount to cover professional services, including legal fees used in pursuit of the claim, Schaub said.
No decision has been made on what will be done with the money, he said.
If the matter was not settled and went to court, Korhonen faced paying more than $70,000 in damages to the town, according to a letter the town’s attorney sent to Korhonen in late January.
