AUBURN — The American Legion Family, William J. Roger’s Post 153 will host a 115th anniversary “Remember the Maine” breakfast from 8 to 10 a.m. Sunday, Feb. 17.

“’Remember the Maine'” has been echoed by veterans for 115 years,” said Paul R. Bernard, public relations officer. “But since the unveiling of the ‘Remember the Maine Memorial Monument’ at Veterans Memorial Park by Rear Admiral Kevin McCoy, United States Navy, it has been easier remembering those five sailors aboard who were from Maine and lost their lives.”

The men who paid the ultimate price on the Maine were Frank Talbot of Bath, Millard F. Harris of Boothbay Harbor, Clarence Lowell of South Gardiner, Bernard Lynch of Portland and William Tinsman of Deering.

Bernard noted that there have been five ships called the USS Maine. The first USS Maine (ACR-1), was a second-class pre-dreadnought battleship launched in 1889, whose sinking by an explosion on Feb. 15, 1898, precipitated the Spanish-American War.

The breakfast menu will consist of scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage, home fries, baked beans, white or wheat toast and the military’s infamous S.O.S. with Army coffee and juice, plus an old Beaulieu family recipe for crepes that has been passed down for generations from Quebec and France. The cost is $6 for adults, $4 children under 12.

All money raised supports veteran programs. For information on membership, contact Commander Dave Richardson at 782-1118 or email [email protected] or send mail to New Auburn American Legion, William Rogers Post 153, 71 South Main St., Auburn, ME 04210.
