RUMFORD — Paper Moon Players has announced that auditions for Robert Harling’s “Steel Magnolias” will be held at 7 p.m. on Monday and Tuesday, Feb. 18 and 19 at the Mystic Theater, 49 Franklin Street. This is an open call. No appointment necessary. Performance dates are set for April 11 through 13.

This modern classic is set in Truvy’s Beauty Spot salon in Chinquapin, Louisiana, where all the ladies who are anybody come to get their hair done. Helped by her new assistant, Annelle (who is not sure if she is still married or not), the outspoken and wisecracking Truvy dispenses shampoos and and free advice to the town’s rich curmudgeon Ouiser; an eccentric widow, Miss Clairee, and the local social leader M’Lynn, whose daughter Shelby is about to marry. Filled with hilarious repartee and not a few acerbic but humorously revealing verbal collisions, the play moves toward tragedy  in the second act. The sudden realization of their mortality draws on the underlying strength and love which give the play and its characters the special quality to make them touching, funny and marvelously amiable company in good times and bad.

The readings will consist of monologues and scenes from the play. All ages and experience are welcome. Keep in mind these ladies are southern so please attempt an accent. “Steel Magnolias” will be directed by Keith A. Grassette assisted by Melissa Hope Fallon.
