1915 – 2013

AUBURN — Ellen Larrabee, 98, of Mechanic Falls, died Tuesday, Feb. 12, at the Hospice House in Auburn.

She was born in Gardiner, on Jan. 23, 1915, to James William and Elsie Ranlett Lodge. She spent her childhood in Massachusetts and pursued her teaching degree at Framingham Normal School.

During her life she had been employed at Marcal Paper Mill in Mechanic Falls and Peck’s Department Store in Lewiston. An active member of the community, she was a member of the Rebekah Lodge in Mechanic Falls, the Susanna Wesley Circle of the West Minot Church and a member of the Minot Corner Methodist Church.

As the wife of a volunteer fireman, Ellen belonged to the Ladies Auxiliary of the Mechanic Falls Fire Dept. and worked the voting poles at election time for many years. While her grandchildren were in school, Nannie, as she was called, volunteered her time at the Elm Street School library. Traveling and visiting new places was a longtime love of hers. She also enjoyed puzzles, crocheting and she was an avid reader.

She is survived by a son, Doug Larrabee; a daughter, Judy Benson; four grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; a brother, Albert Stronach; and two sisters, Alice Jean Pepin and Marion Finnerty.

She was predeceased by her husband, Richard, in December of 1991; a brother, Col. Lewis Millett; and a great-grandson, Eric Benson.
