AUGUSTA — Defending Western Class D boys’ basketball champion and No. 1 seed Forest Hills made a strong statement Saturday, routing No. 9 Richmond, 74-41, in the quarterfinals at Augusta Civic Center.
Forest Hills raced to leads of 26-7 after the first quarter and 51-17 at halftime, shooting 64 percent from the field prior to intermission.
Evan Worster, in his fifth tournament and starting his state-record 101st consecutive game, led the Tigers (17-2) with 18 points. Ryan Petrin scored 10 of his 17 in the first period.
Tanner Daigle added 10 points off the bench, and Derick and Brandon Ouellette each added nine while combining for 13 assists.
Eddie Stewart and Cam Emmons paced the Bobcats (8-10) with seven points apiece.
A.R. Gould 64, North Haven 49
Zacharia Mohamed scored 16 of his 25 points in the second half, leading A.R. Gould, the Long Creek youth center based in South Portland, to the semifinals for the second time in four years.
Tim Robertson added 23 for the Bears (12-7), who previously advanced to the second round in 2010.
A.R. Gould will face Forest Hills in the semifinals at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday.
Avery Waterman knocked down a game-high 27 points for North Haven, including four 3-pointers. Zebadiah Campbell contributed 10 points for the Hawks (14-4), who have 10 boys on their roster despite an enrollment of only 21 students.
Valley 62, Greenville 56
Carrington Miller and Josh West combined for 19 points in the fourth quarter and 50 in all while leading the Cavaliers (16-3) to their second win in three tries this year against the Lakers (11-8).
Miller finished with 29 points. He hit all six of his free-throw attempts in the game and was 4-for-4 in the fourth quarter.
Valley led 17-8 after one quarter and mostly maintained that advantage throughout. Henry Hersey topped Greenville with 20 points. Howie Stone had 13 and Tristan Richards tossed in 10.
Hyde 45, Seacoast Christian 35
Hyde School of Bath awakened from a slow start to slip Seacoast Christian of South Berwick for the third time this winter.
Warsame Mohamed led the Phoenix (15-3) with 18 points. Wilson MacMillan and Ben Burlock each chipped in six points for Hyde, which will encounter Valley in the semifinals at 10 a.m. Wednesday.
Seacoast led 13-10 after one period before being held to two points in the second. Silas Thompson paced the Guardians with eight points. Isaac LaCroix pitched in six.
