CASTINE — The University of Maine at Farmington withstood a late Maine Maritime rally, by sinking 3 of 4 free throws in the final 13 seconds, to earn a 56-52 win in a North Atlantic Conference women’s basketball quarterfinals Tuesday.
Kari Jones paced Maine Maritime with a game-high 14 points while Leah Jackson scored 11 and grabbed a game-best 15 rebounds.
Lindsay Ranquist paced UMF with 11 points and Rachel Clement added 10. Meghan Smith and Holly Oliver each pulled down seven rebounds.
Baseball
Berry 6, Bates 9
ROME, Ga. — Berry College pitchers TJ Montgomery and Ben Jernigan combined on a one-hit shutout as the host Vikings dealt the Bates College baseball team a 6-0 defeat in the Bobcats’ nine-inning season opener on Tuesday.
Montgomery allowed only one hit and one walk in his six innings of work, and struck out six batters. Jernigan picked things up aptly in the seventh inning, throwing three perfect innings while striking out four.
Berry (3-3) gave Montgomery and Jernigan all the run support they needed with four runs in the fourth inning, all charged to Bates junior lefthander Tom Baroni, three of them earned. Zach Farmer, Doug Heath and Ryan Smith loaded the bases with no outs on a single, walk and single, respectively.
Men’s basketball
Wentworth 73, Nichols 69
BOSTON —  Senior Colin Johnson scored a game-high 24 points and classmate Corey Therriault for Auburn scored 13 of his 15 points in the second half as the Wentworth Institute of Technology men’s basketball team held off Nichols, 73-69, in a Commonwealth Coast Conference quarterfinal round contest.
The opening four minutes would see a pair of ties and three lead changes, with the third coming on a Johnson 3-pointer that gave the hosts a 12-10 lead. Less than two minutes later Johnson would again connect from downtown to extend the lead to five, and, after the Bison would cut the lead to one.
, six straight Leopard points would give the Black & Gold a 23-16 lead with 11:23 left.
