(Editorial) The Republicans have in process of development plans to prevent any illegal methods being used in the voting places on election day. It is rumored that several live detectives will be imported here for the special purpose of seeing that the voting is conducted on the level. “If any funny business is tried on election day,” said a Republican to the Sun, “you will see whoever tries it get into serious trouble right away quick. We may be beaten, but we do not propose to have the election stolen from us. Not much.” As the results of alleged frauds in the Democratic caucus Feb. 11, it is expected several arrests will be made soon.

50 years ago, 1963
(Editorial) We have long favored a third bridge over the Androscoggin River between Lewiston and Auburn, to relieve the serious bottleneck which the North bridge has been for over a decade and a half. However, we find both sensible and reasonable the determination of the State Highway Commission, after a lengthy study, that construction of such a bridge should not be undertaken at this time and not until after steps are taken to more fully utilize the South bridge.

Some police officers in Lewiston have expressed concern that the city’s new seat belt requirements for all city employees prevent quick exits from cruisers or access to firearms in certain emergency situations. “We realize that seat belts can save a life, but in some situations, it may also cost a life,” said Robert Wailus, president of the International Brotherhood of Police Officers, who will meet with Lewiston Personnel Director Denis Jean and Police Chief Gregory C. Hanscom on March 4 to discuss these reservations
