FARMINGTON — A Franklin County Superior Court justice sentenced an Augusta man Friday to serve 30 days in jail for taking a truck and diesel fuel in January.

Darren L. Costa, 47, pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge of theft by unauthorized use of property in court in Farmington.

The state dismissed a charge of misdemeanor theft by unauthorized taking or transfer in a plea agreement.

Costa was arrested by Jay police while he was sitting in the 2002 Dodge Ram dual-wheel truck at C.N. Brown in Jay and drinking a beer. Jay police were alerted to a person acting suspicious in the truck, and went to the store to investigate. When they ran the license plate, they learned the  truck had been stolen from an Augusta parking garage earlier in the day.

The truck, which had been in a parking garage at the MaineGeneral Medical Center in Augusta with the keys in it, had not been reported stolen before Jay police checked the plates.

Justice Robert Murray also ordered Costa to pay $195 in restitution.

Costa began serving his sentence Friday when he was taken to Franklin County jail in Farmington.
