1948 – 2013

TOGUS — Arthur C. Cates, 64, of Turner, passed away Friday morning at the VA Hospital in Togus.

He was born in Skowhegan, Sept. 12, 1948, a son of the late Kenneth and Beatrice (Drake) Cates. He grew up in the Skowhegan area and attended local schools there.

In April of 1968, Arthur enlisted in the United States Army and was stationed in Germany for three years during Vietnam, until his discharge in 1971. During that time, he was very proud to be part of a team of Vulcan System Mechanics, working on new technology for the military. After his service, Arthur spent time traveling to various locations and worked as a carpenter, which he loved doing.

On June 15, 1996 he married Lucille Gendron-Cates at St. Agnes Church in Pittsfield. Shortly after that, he started a construction business, Cates Carpentry, where he specialized in Maine white cedar decks in the Bangor area. Arthur will always be remembered for his love of playing the guitar, vegetable and flower gardening, outdoor activities, such as hiking and enjoying nature, and spending quality time with his grandchildren, doing all these kinds of things.

He is survived by the love of his life for 17 years, Lucille Gendron-Cates of Turner; and his stepchildren, Gregory P. Landry of Londonderry, N.H., Andrea Krebs and her husband, Mario, of Turner. He also leaves behind the highlights of his life, his three grandchildren Nikolai, Benjamin and Samantha Krebs of Turner; as well as a brother, Phillip Cates and his wife, Shari, of Lincoln, Ill.; a sister, Shirley Russell and her husband, William, of Marlborough, Conn.; and many nieces and nephews.

He is predeceased by five brothers, George, William, Albert, Lloyd and Malcom; as well as three sisters, Charlotte, Catherine and Patricia.
