CANTON — The Board of Selectmen on Thursday gave the OK to Fire Chief Shane Gallant to buy a 1993 rebuilt pumper engine for $50,000.

The engine, with 50,000 miles on it, was fully equipped with hydraulic Jaws of Life, hoses, three air bags for stabilizing autos in accidents, ladders and a diesel generator, Gallant said.

He said the back seat of the cab is equipped and roomy enough so volunteers can get their air packs on before arriving at the scene of a fire. He and Assistant Fire Chief Jason Vaughn plan to drive to Maryland this weekend to bring the truck back. The board approved the $50,000 and travel expenses to come from the Fire Reserve Account.

In other business:

* Malcolm Ray reported that all but the road to the boat ramp is finished, and that should be done by spring. He said that before selling any of the properties around the dam or at the brownfield site, they should apply for the Maine Department of Transportation’s VRAP program, which would protect the town from contamination claims.

There will be deed restrictions on the property except that opposite the Canton Variety Store. There will be two sites on that side of the dam leaving space to access the dam, as well as one by the boat ramp and one over the brownfield area. The town will keep access to the dam on both sides of Whitney Brook.

* Tom Carroll of Patriot Renewables said there would be another windmill hearing at a time in the near future. Town Administrator Harry Childs said CMP is planning a substation for the windmill project on Ludden Road. It will be a $6 million project.

* Gallant said the roads would be posted this weekend. Overuse of Meadowview Road by campers in the spring is a serious problem and ways to block the road were discussed.
