100 years ago, 1913
The work of rebuilding the building owned by the Great Department Store which was burned on the morning of February 16, is to begin within a short time. The building will be much more solidly constructed. Bowling alleys also will be reinstalled. Manager H. F. Walker of L. and A. alleys states that eight alleys will be installed in the new building, instead of six, as formerly. The alleys also will be remodeled in other ways , giving a better chance for spectators to see the games.

50 years ago, 1963
Auburn’s record $3,249,750 budgetary proposal can be financed without an increase in the current 69-mill tax rate, City Manager Woodbury E. Brackett informed the Auburn City Council late yesterday afternoon when he presented his spending estimates for the 1963-64 fiscal year. For the current year, Auburn is operating on a $3,191,088 budget and Manager Brackett informed the council he anticipates a $40,000 surplus at the end of the fiscal year on March 31.

25 years ago, 1988
The proposed 1988-89 budget for Lewiston schools is $21,376,376, up about $4.5 million, or 26.5 percent, over the current budget of $16,896,045. The largest increase is in “undistributed expenses,” which include administration, student transportation, and building operation and maintenance. A 40.4 percent increase in funds for vocational education is also included in the proposal. The School Committee will hold its first workshop meeting tonight.
