With two little children, one of them only four months old, Mrs. Catherine Tracy, the Lewiston police matron, is on her way to Halifax, N.S. Her journey of 445 miles will take her over a day and a half. The object of the trip is to take the children to relatives, where they can be cared for without becoming dependent upon the city of Lewiston. Although the expenses of the trip are being paid by the city of Lewiston, they are comparatively small and are nothing in comparison with what the cost of boarding the children in this city would be. The case is a rather sad one, for the father died last summer and the mother passed away in Lewiston the first of February. This left a boy of 4 years and a girl but 4 months old to be cared for. The parents had never called for assistance from the city, but they left little or nothing for the children.

Auburn City Manager Woodbury E. Brackett’s hold-the-line budget was further challenged last night when Auburn Highway Department employees petitioned the Auburn City Council for a reduction of their work week and increased vacation periods. The AHD employees petitioned the council for a 40-hour work week, a reduction of two-and-one-half hours from their present schedule; a day-and-a-half of vacation for each month worked, for employees with ten or more years of service; and time and a half after their 40-hour work week.
