100 years ago, 1913
Preparations are being made by the Lewiston, Augusta and Waterville railway for the erection of two new bridges in Lewiston at once. Both bridges will span the Maine Central Railroad and are what are known to the road officials as viaducts. The first to be built will be the “straight bridge,” so-called, near the Lisbon town line and later work will commence on the “crooked bridge,” which is near the foot of Pleasant street and the Lisbon road. These bridges will be much more modern than those now in use and will be 40-ton bridges, capable of holding up twice the weight the present ones can. Thus, two cars, fully loaded, or a freight locomotive and a trailer can pass over either bridge at the same time with safety.

50 years ago, 1963
Lewiston Industrial Development Director Samuel Michael said today that a large furniture manufacturing concern has indicated interest in opening a plant in the Textile City. The furniture company, he said, would employ approximately 200 persons, mostly men, and has shown an interest in taking up space in the former Continental Mill property on Cedar Street. Michael declined to reveal the name of the concern.

25 years ago, 1988
The Greene Bicentennial Committee was given a $10,000 loan by residents at the town meeting Saturday to help with expenses such as advance payments to entertainers. The committee, which is planning a celebration for late this summer marking the town’s 200th year, also received $10,000 in 1987.
