PORTLAND — The Portland Symphony Orchestra will present “Mathis der Maler” (Matthias the Painter), composed by Paul Hindemith as an adaptation of his own opera of the same name, at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, April 14 at Merrill Auditorium.
Maestro Robert Moody will conduct the matinee concert which will open with G. F. Handel’s Concerto a due cori No. 1 before moving on to Henri Tomasi’s Concerto for Saxophone, with guest saxophonist Ben Robinette.
The Sunday Classical concert concludes with Hindemith’s Mathis der Maler. The work was inspired by a multi-panel altarpiece created for a monastery at Isenheim and painted by Mathis Nithardt, known as Grünewald. The altarpiece is a complex series of paintings on hinged panels that open to reveal still more paintings within. There are portraits of saints and depictions of the Annunciation, the crucifixion of Christ, the resurrection, and at its innermost point a sculpture of the Last Supper. Three of the panels lent their names and inspiration to this symphony: Angelic Concert, Entombment, and The Temptation of Saint Anthony. The music follows the stories within the panels, becoming fast paced, halting or slow and smooth at times.
Tickets range in price from $26 to $64 and can be purchased through porttix.com or 207-842-0800, or in person at the box office at Merrill Auditorium, 20 Myrtle Street, from noon to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday.
