BOCA RATON, Fla. — Rookie Jake Marks pitched a complete game shutout to lead the University of Maine baseball team to an 8-0 win over Florida Atlantic University on Tuesday night.

Marks struck out eight batters in the game and allowed just three hits in the victory to improve to 1-0 on the season.

Maine improves to 9-10 on the season with the victory, while FAU falls to 10-7.

Maine took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Sam Balzano singled up the middle to lead off the game. Colin Gay was hit and Michael Fransoso followed with a single to load the bases. Balzano scored the first run of the game when Maine hit into a double play.

The Black Bears added six runs in the top of the fourth inning. Brian Doran (Ajax, Ontario) and Eric White (Brewer, Maine) drew back-to-back walks. Troy Black (Mississauga, Ontario) singled to load the bases. Balzano followed with a single to left and Doran scored. Gay hit a two-run single to left field plating White and Black. Balzano and Gay then pulled off a double steal. Fransoso followed with a two-run single to right field. Fransoso scored when Alex Calbick singled.

The Black Bears capped the scoring in the top of the eighth inning. Mike Connolly (Bridgewater, Mass.) walked and scored when Fransoso hit a sacrifice fly.

Fransoso finished the game 3-for-3 with a run scored and three RBI. Gay scored a run and drove in a pair.

The story of the game, however, was Marks. In his first collegiate start, he pitched all nine innings and allowed just three hits while striking out eight.

Softball

Maine drops pair

TAMPA, Fla. — Trailing by four runs heading into the top of the seventh, the Black Bears were able to plate three runs but could not score a fourth, falling to Quinnipiac 6-5 in game one of two on Tuesday afternoon.

EmJ Fogel led Maine going 3-for-4 with two runs scored and a RBI while Hannah Hill of Fryeburg added a pair of hits while also scoring a run with a RBI.

Maine jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the second. Fogel led off the inning with a single up the middle before advancing to second on a bunt single from Hill. Stephanie Wood’s one out single back up the box scored Fogel from second and advanced Hill to third. A walk from Makaila Kowalsky loaded the bases with a walk before Jessica Burk’s single into left plated Hill. The Bobcats tied the game with a pair of runs in the bottom of the third before taking a 6-2 lead with four runs in the home half of the fourth.

Hill picks up the loss for Maine after going 3.1 innings and giving up six runs, three earned, on six hits with two strikeouts and three walks. Alexis Bogdanovich tossed 2.2 innings of shutout ball for Maine while giving up four hits with one strikeout and a pair of walks.

In the evening game, Maine softball team fell to South Florida, 11-0, in five innings on Tuesday evening. The loss slips Maine back to 1-20, while the Bulls improve to 16-10. Kourtney Salvarola led the Bulls with a 2-for-2 night including a grand slam and two runs scored. USF added seven runs, on two more home runs, in the bottom of the third, to take an 11-0 lead.

Women’s lacrosse

Wesley 15, Thomas 10

ORLANDO, Fla. —The Terriers (3-2) fell to Wesley (3-3) in a non-conference women’s lacrosse matchup 15-10 on Tuesday.

The game was the first contest for Thomas on their spring trip in Florida.

Thomas was led by junior Miranda Tinsman (who led the squad with five goals and one assist. Midfielder Ceara DIBiase contributed with two tallies and one helper, extending her goals streak to five games.

Morgan Hutchins of Dixfield helped on the defensive end, recording a team-leading nine groundballs, while senior Jasmine Ryan had a team-high three caused turnovers.

Men’s lacrosse

Colby 19, NEC 11

WATERVILLE — Ian Deveau finished with 10 points on the day with seven goals and three assists in Colby College’s 19-11 non-conference men’s lacrosse win over New England College at Bill Alfond Field on Tuesday

Colby, ranked seventh in New England, moves to 2-0 overall heading into Saturday’s noon game at Hamilton College. The Pilgrims drop to 1-2 overall and will meet Rensselaer on Saturday at 1 p.m. in Alexandria, Va.

Deveau just missed tying Colby’s record for most goals in a game. Joel Castleman had eight goals against Plymouth State back in 1981.

He also holds the single-game points record with 13 in that victory over Plymouth State.

Deveau reached 140 career points with his big day, moving his totals to 73 goals and 67 assists just two games into his senior season. Deveau leads the Mules in scoring with 10 goals and three assists in two games.

Colby senior attacker John Jennings (Danvers, Mass.) scored five goals for the second straight game and also has 10 goals in two starts. He moved his career totals to 98 goals and nine assists for 107 points.
