Gov. Paul LePage is so against Obamacare, he announced that he “won’t lift a finger” to set up a health insurance exchange, or allow Medicaid expansion to provide insurance to 69,000 of the 120,000 Mainers presently uninsured.

He is against providing parents health care for sick children. He refuses to let the federal government pay the entire costs of covering newly eligible Medicaid beneficiaries for the first three years, and 90 percent after that.

He even rejects millions of federal dollars to pay for it, so he is unconcerned about the additional pressure his actions will put on Maine’s economy, and doesn’t care that Maine families will receive no new Medicaid benefits, while tax dollars are sent to fund Medicaid expansion in other states.

He doesn’t support Maine families having family doctors, either.

By not supporting Medicaid expansion, he will allow 27,000 more families to lose health care, including the young, those with disabilities and low-income parents.

Mary Mayhew, Maine Commissioner of Health and Human Services, is trying to convince other Republican states to reject expansion, yet eight Republican governors are signing up. Even Rick Scott, Republican governor of Florida, said that with the federal government picking up the tab, “ I cannot in good conscience deny Floridians needed access to health care.”

Gov. LePage is now a minority even within his own party, and deservedly so. He needs to be sent back to Marden’s, where his damaged goods can’t ruin everybody’s lives.
