BETHEL — How to make “Good Meals in 30 Minutes or Less” is the topic of a To Your Health program to be held from 4:30 to 6 p.m. Thursday, March 21, at the Bethel Congregational Church, 32 Church St.

Chef Elton Cole and Pat Watson, registered dietitian at Stephens Memorial Hospital, will hold a workshop on putting together quick and easy meals. The program is part of a year-long series offered by To Your Health of Western Mountains Senior College focusing on the theme “maximizing our health and happiness as we grow older, or keeping the glass half-full.”

Watson will give a talk on how to make meals nutritious, delicious and simple.

Cole will hold a hands-on cooking demonstration. He said, “Quick, healthy meals can be prepared without the need to use pre-packaged, frozen, boxed or canned products that can be extremely high in saturated fats and sodium.” He expects to prepare two dishes for sampling. He will also talk about good sources for recipes and offer tips on both personal and food handling safety.

Watson is a registered, licensed dietitian and certified diabetes educator with a master’s degree in nutritional sciences. She has been employed at SMH for 22 years and is currently the director of food and nutrition services as well as the dietitian for the hospital’s diabetes education program. In addition to her work as a clinical dietitian, Watson has experience in public health, long term care and as a college professor. In 2010 Watson was recognized by the Maine Dietetic Association as the Outstanding Dietitian of the Year.

Cole, a graduate of Telstar High School, has an associate arts degree in culinary arts from the N.H. Vocational Technical College, Berlin, NH. He has worked for many years as head cook, production coordinator, and manager of the food services department at SMH, where he has been employed for nearly 30 years. He is currently employed by the Maine Medical Center as the MaineHealth On-Site Supply Chain Manager for SMH.

The program is offered with the collaboration of Bethel Family Health Center, MSAD 44/Continuing Education and MaineHealth Learning Resource Center of SMH. The program is open to the public and admission is free. For more information, call R. Tifft at 824-2053.
