AUBURN — Councilors agreed Monday that they will vote on their final work plan and goals for the city manager at their April 1 meeting.

City Manager Clinton Deschene briefly reviewed the proposed goal-setting process with councilors, who have been working to hone the list since a Saturday goal-setting session in January.

“I think I hit most of your suggestions,” Deschene said Monday. “If you have other changes, I can rework them.”

The eight-item list includes projects that are already underway, including opening a twin-rink ice arena this year, working toward a public vote on building a new high school and adopting a budget for the 2013-14 fiscal year.

Councilors reviewed another one of their top goals last week — changes to the way the city pursues economic development projects.

According to a plan presented by Mayor Jonathan LaBonte, Lewiston and Auburn would create two new groups. One would focus on developing business and promoting events downtown. A second would promote industrial- and travel-related business investments on the two cities’ outskirts, especially around industrial parks and the Maine Turnpike interchanges.

Another item on their goals list calls for hosting neighborhood meetings with residents around the city this summer to encourage them to be more involved in city business and decisions. This involvement will help promote safer work environments for the city staff.

Councilors also discussed another one of the goals last month — creating a new code of conduct for future councilors.

Other items on the work plan are getting financial reports, labor negotiation updates and policy discussions to councilors in a more timely manner.

Deschene said the entire work plan will be posted to the city’s website once the council adopts it.
