RUMFORD — At their 7 p.m. meeting Thursday, selectmen are expected to approve a Maine Department of Transportation project to remove the Haverhill Bridge to the Rumford paper mill.

The state owns the 365-foot, concrete-and-steel-girder span, which was built in 1964 in the same place as a previous bridge, Ben Condon, MDOT project manager, said during a public hearing in November 2011.

The Haverhill Bridge provides access to the NewPage Inc. mill and to Brookfield Power from upper Congress Street behind Rite Aid.

The state wants to remove the bridge that once spanned water in the canal system and replace it with a less costly sloping road. The canal was realigned so it no longer flows under the bridge.

Other agenda items include an update from Superintendent Thomas Ward on the RSU 10 budget and a discussion with RSU 10 board members on the district’s future plans.

Under old business, selectmen are to hear a request from the Parks & Recreation Commission to approve the Hosmer Field Infield Renovation bid.

Among new business items are:

* A request from the tax collector-constable and town clerk-treasurer for a municipal order for tax payment applications.

* Requests from Envision Rumford! to approve use of town property for a zip line and to close town streets on May 4.

Two executive sessions will be held for police department union negotiations and a poverty abatement request.

The meeting will be held in Rumford Falls Auditorium on March 21.
