String Quartet performs Haydn

LEEDS — The Amarantos String Quartet will perform Franz Josef Haydn’s “The Seven Last Words of the Cross” in concert at 7 p.m. Friday, March 29, at the Leeds Community Church, 123 Church Hill Road. All are invited. Admission is by donation.

Haydn is sometimes called the “father of the string quartet” and this is one of his masterpieces, performed in a venue well suited to the subtlety and intimacy of the string quartet.

Advanced Excel class slated

AUBURN — The Corporate and Community Services Department at Central Maine Community College will offer Advanced Excel: Functions and Data Analysis on Friday, April 19, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Deadline for registration is April 15.

This one day, hands-on course teaches the basics of building custom, nested and 3D formulas; how to create “smart” spreadsheets; how to create and use named ranges; and how to use Excel’s table function to manage lists. Participants will learn how to analyze and extract custom information. They will also learn how to create dynamic charts from raw spreadsheet data. The cost is $139 and includes all materials.

Food Preserver applications

FALMOUTH — University of Maine Cooperative Extension in Cumberland County is offering the Master Food Preserver Training Course beginning June 13. The 2013 training program, featuring hands-on classes on all aspects of safe home food preservation, will be held on 10 Thursdays, 5:30 to 8:30 p.m., in Falmouth and Gorham.

A master food preserver is a trained volunteer of UMaine Extension. Master food preservers receive 35 hours of practical training in basic food preservation methods. After the training, each master food preserver agrees to “give back” 20 hours of volunteer time over a 12-month period as a participant in numerous community-based projects.

The projects include teaching hands-on food preservation workshops, staffing educational displays and demonstrations and farmers markets, county fairs and other food-related events, and working with families, community groups and individuals to promote food preservation interests.

Participants are selected through an application process. Applications are available by calling 800-287-1471 or 207-781-6099. Starting April 1, applications can be downloaded from extension.umaine.edu/cumberland. The deadline for submitting applications is 4:30 p.m. May 3.
