Bridging the gap when disaster strikes is the job of the Androscoggin Valley American Red Cross and since last year’s “April Fool’s Day Flood” the group’s ability to respond has increased dramatically. “We’re a lot better situated this year than we were at this point in 1987,” Director Bonnie Bickford said. Only about 20 people throughout the tri-county area could be called on for assistance before last year’s swollen rivers forced evacuations and isolated towns. One year later, though, about 200 trained volunteers can be contacted to staff the damage assessment and disaster service programs.
