I think Gabby is just scratching the surface,” he said. “I am very excited to watch her grow, on and off the court, during her time at CM. LYNDON, Vt. —   The University of Maine at Farmington sophomore Michelle Cote (Arundel, Maine/Thornton Academy) had three hits, senior Kaitlyn Bartlett (Chesterville, Maine/Mt. Blue) hit her third home run of the year, and freshman Emily Soule (Chelsea, Maine/Cony) kept Lyndon State College’s bats in check as the Beavers posted an 8-2 win over the Hornets, in game one of a North Atlantic Conference softball doubleheader at Skip Pound Field.

UMaine-Farmington (4-5, 2-4 NAC) could not complete the sweep however, dropping game two to Lyndon State, 6-5.

The Beavers posted one run in the top of the first inning, and added two more in the second to take a 3-0 lead. Amy Jones’ (Augusta, Maine/Cony) grounder to short allowed Meryl Bond (Jefferson, Maine/Erskine Academy) to cross for UMF’s first run of the second inning, and Cote singled home Devin Fitzgerald (Casco, Maine/Lake Region) for the second run. Fitzgerald got aboard with a double earlier in the frame.

A four-run fourth inning effectively put the game away for Farmington. Cote and Lily Barry (Hermon, Maine/Hermon) each plated a run on a base hit, and Bartlett scored Barry on a two-run shot.

Farmington amassed 11 hits, with Jones and Bartlett each getting two hits; Bartlett finished game one with a double, a home run, and two runs batted in. Jones, batting in the leadoff spot, crossed the plate three times and had one RBI.

Soule scattered six hits in the complete game win, allowing two earned runs while fanning six Hornets. She also helped her cause at the plate with a double. Meghan Gadapee started in the circle for Lyndon and allowed seven runs, six earned, on eight hits and was charged with the loss.

In game two, Farmington’s late inning comeback fell short of the mark. Trailing 6-2 after five innings, the Beavers scored one run in the sixth on a double steal of third and home by Cote and Jones.

UMF cut into Lyndon State’s lead even further in the seventh when Casey Mull (Portland, Maine/Cheverus) singled home Soule, and the lead was down to one run when Jones doubled with two outs to score Mull. Cote singles to move Jones over to third, but Lyndon State pitcher Katie Davis induced a pop-up to short for the final out of the game to end the Farmington rally.

Jones finished with three hits, two runs scored, and one RBI, while Cote and Lauren Perkins (East Hanover, N.J/Whippany Park) charted two hits each. Emma Vaillancourt (Saco, Maine/Thornton Academy) struck out nine Lyndon batters over her six innings in the circle, but yielded six runs, four earned, on eight hits with three walks in the loss.

Davis surrendered 10 hits and seven walks in the circle for the Hornets, but picked up her first win of the season.

Ridge tossed a complete game for Bowdoin, allowing four singles and striking out five batters, allowing one unearned run in the victory. Nick Whittaker took a tough-luck loss for the Monks, permitting two earned runs and six hits over seven innings of work.

St. Joseph’s took an early lead in the fourth inning, getting three of their four hits in succession following an error. Nic Lops brought home Louie Vigars with a run-scoring single to give the visitors the lead. The Monks loaded the bases, but Ridge was able to get out of the jam with a pop-out and a flyout to end the threat.

Duncan Taylor struck out swinging, but the ball kicked away from home plate, allowing John Lefeber and Danny Findley to advance to second and third with two outs. After a sacrifice moved him to second base, Ridge was able to get Alex Markakis on a pop out to second. Alex Lorenc put a charge into the final pitch of the game, driving a long fly to left field. Bowdoin’s Tim McGarry settled under it, a few feet shy of the warning track, to close out the contest.
