PERU — Four new members elected Tuesday to the Board of Selectmen called for responsible, open government and healing for the town.

Former Selectman Jim Pulsifer will serve a two-month term; Lee Merrill, 14 months; and Larry Snowman and Danny Wing, 26 months each.

They replace Tim Holland, Kathy Hussey, Ed Ferland and Richard Powell, who were recalled from office last month after a bitter debate over whether Hussey should be able to serve simultaneously as a selectman and a town employee.

“I think we need to start the process of bringing the town together and making the town run properly,” Pulsifer said Tuesday night after winning a seat with 164 votes to Tammy Ferland’s 149.

Snowman thanked voters for giving him the opportunity to serve them.

“I will try to keep them informed and be honest and not try to hide anything,” he said.

Snowman got 164 votes and Wing got 169, beating Wayne Moore and John Witherell, who got 100 and 97 votes, respectively.

“Thank you to all the people for this support,” Wing said, “and I’ll do the best I can for the town.”

Merrill received 204 votes to Kevin Taylor’s 95.

“I’m going to try my best to do what’s good for the town,” Merrill said. “We’ve got to make cutbacks in our spending.”

The four will join Laurieann Milligan, who was the only selectman to survive the recall effort.

With a full board again, town business can proceed after months of wrangling over board decisions on Hussey’s status.

Hussey refused to step down as selectman or town secretary after voters passed an ordinance in November 2012 that prohibited town employees from simultaneously serving on either the Board of Selectmen or the Finance Committee.

The Maine Municipal Association advised selectmen last year that Hussey could finish her current term because there was no effective date listed in the ordinance. The board took that advice.
