LEWISTON — The U.S.S. Canberra Association in conjunction with area veterans’ organizations will conduct a special service at noon Saturday, April 13, on the down river of the James B. Longley Memorial Bridge.

The service is for “All Hands Lost at Sea” and the 50th anniversary of the sinking of the nuclear submarine the USS Thresher SSN593.

The public is invited. All interested groups are asked to gather at 11:30 a.m. at the rear of Yvon’s Car Wash.

Thomas C. Dow U.S. Navy (Ret.), who was stationed aboard the USS recovery ARS43, which took part in the search for the Thresher, will speak about his experiences.

The Thresher sank on April 10, 1963, with the loss of all 129 crew members, officers and civilians aboard.

Jerry Der Boghosian, who was employed at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in New Hampshire and worked on the Thresher, will talk about his experiences in the building process of the Thresher and his relationship with the crew.

The group will then march to the center of the bridge, where Rev. Douglas Taylor will deliver the invocation.

The throwing of the wreath into the Androscoggin River, a traditional memorial for “All Hands Lost at Sea,” will take place.

The service will conclude with “Taps” and the singing of “God Bless America.” The service will be held rain or shine.
