NORTH YARMOUTH — North Yarmouth Historical Society will present its second annual Pre Patriots Day Program on The Squalus Disaster with master storyteller and scientist Gordon Corbett at 6:30 p.m. Sunday, April 14, at Wescustogo Hall, Route 115. All donations gratefully appreciated, and dessert will be served.
The program focuses on the Squalus disaster of May 23, 1939, when 26 men, trapped in a sunken submarine off the Isles of Shoals, drowned under 243 feet of water. Thirty-three men survived and were rescued. This harrowing incident shook the nation and was especially devastating to residents of Maine and New Hampshire.
Science can explain the disaster and the rescue of the Squalus survivors. None can tell the story better than educator Gordon Corbett, who has studied the incident for years and specializes in making history come alive with science demonstrations and visuals. His program last year on the Titanic drew record crowds.
NYHS welcomes the whole family to come hear a compelling story that is a perfect mix of history and science.
