100 years ago, 1913
Lewiston police, Thursdays, recovered a part of the jewelry which was stolen March 27 from the Barnstone jewelry store on Lisbon street. At the time, the stolen goods were estimated to be at about $500. One man was taken to the police station on suspicion and the police expect to give the third degree in sa few hours to another man who may be connected with the break. The goods thus far recovered include 21 rings, four watch fobs, three or four sets of beads, and several crosses. The break was made by cutting a hole in the show window of the store.

50 years ago, 1963
In a matter of ten years, the Auburn School Department’s proposed budgets have increased by nearly a million dollars and teachers salary accounts have jumped by $772,016. In 1953, the Auburn Superintending School Committee requested a teachers salary appropriation of $526,214 which then included a $100 across the board increase. This year, the school department requests $1,298,230 in salaries and wage with no across the board increase, but a general increase in the account of $83,000.

25 years ago, 1988
Organizers of the Lakeside Center for the Performing Arts, a $1 million entertainment center proposed for the shores of Lake Auburn, have asked the Planning Board to postpone a hearing scheduled for Thursday. Plans for the center, to be located on the grounds of the Central Maine Vocational Technical Institute, earlier came under scrutiny by the Auburn Water District in an effort to determine the impact the project would have on Lake Auburn, the city’s drinking water supply.
