For Spring break in 2001, I was devastated when I could not get a seat on a plane back home from college in New Orleans. I was so determined that I decided I would take a bus, the only affordable option to Lewiston to get me the remainder of the way from Atlanta, where I was stuck in the airport.

After more than 25 hours on that bus, I found myself at a desolate strip mall on outer Lisbon Street; I had not realized the bus station on Main Street was no longer there. This was the moment it became so apparent to me of the Twin Cities’ need for better public transit and more options into the downtown of the second largest metropolitan area in Maine.

It has been many decades since Lewiston-Auburn was buzzing with public transportation options that connected L-A to vibrant cities across the region such as Boston, Quebec and Montreal.

But right now, things are changing. Community leaders such as Sen. Craven, Mayor LaBonte and others are working toward reclaiming that mobility. They need our widespread support and engagement to help move their effort forward to expand bus and rail service to L-A.

In an accessible and central downtown location, better transit options will foster a flourishing, walkable and greener community.

It also has great promise to strengthen our economy, provide access to better jobs, and increase options for economical and efficient transportation.

They deserve the public’s support.
