RUMFORD — A singing event will be held at 6 p.m. Saturday, April 20, at Mountain Valley High School to help raise money for new curtains at Muskie Auditorium.

Diane Mitchell, an employee at Davis Florist on Congress Street, said the event is titled Curtain Call and past singers and judges from the Voices of the Valley singing competition will be invited to perform on the Muskie Auditorium stage at Mountain Valley High School.

“I was having a conversation with (Mountain Valley High School Principal) Matt Gilbert, and we both thought it’d be a great idea to raise money by inviting back some of the people who performed or judged for Voices of the Valley,” Mitchell said. “There’s 12 in all who are set to perform on Saturday.”

Among the performers are Bob Bohren, Peggy Briggette, Robie Schmersal, Hannah Robinson, Jason Lee, Melanie Jordan, Kayla Hodgkins, Thea Dunn, Jay Shawn Wright, Elaine Michaud, Denny Moro, Dan Richard, Amanda Gilbert and Kurt Cihak.

According to Mitchell, Richard will provide the music for the event.

“Without his help, none of this would have been possible,” Mitchell said. “He gave us the invaluable gift of his music.”

All money raised will go toward replacing the side and back curtains of Muskie Auditorium.

“Those curtains have been there since Mountain Valley was opened,” Mitchell said. “The big problem with them is that they’re not flame retardant, but they’re also frayed in places and being held together by pins and clothespins in other places.”

In an April 5 interview with the Rumford Falls Times, Gilbert said the front curtain for Muskie Auditorium was recently replaced by East Sumner resident Alan Osburn. The cost of replacing the side and back curtains is estimated at $6,450, he said.

Some donations by local businesses and residents have already come in, Mitchell said.

“We recently received a community gift from Wal-Mart in the form of $500,” Mitchell said, “Oxford Federal Credit Union also gave us a $100 check. People have really been helping us out.”

Tickets are $5 per person, or $20 for a family. Advanced tickets are available at Davis Florist, or at the front office at Mountain Valley High School.
