WISCASSET — Two games into the Mountain Valley Conference high school baseball season, Randy Ridley’s young Lisbon team has found the going tough in its first two road games.
In a loss to Monmouth on Thursday, the Greyhounds permitted four first-inning runs. The same struggles showed up on Friday against rival Wiscasset, which scored three runs in the first and four more in the second frame in an 8-5 victory.
The win gives the Wolverines a 1-0 mark, while Lisbon dropped to 0-2. Both teams are home on Monday, with Lisbon hosting Mt. Abram and Wiscasset entertaining Telstar.
“We have seven new starters, one who hasn’t played since he was a freshman, with many of them in the first year of playing varsity,” Ridley said.
After Wiscasset committed a pair of miscues in the top of the first to give Lisbon a 1-0 lead, the Wolverines batted around in the home half of the first. Zach Ellison singled and Cory Graves walked to begin things against Greyhounds starting pitcher Brandon Hovey. With one out, Dylan McMahon laced an RBI single to tie the game, and a pair of Lisbon errors allowed two more runs to score for a 3-1 Wiscasset lead.
Another Greyhound error in the second, along with three Wiscasset singles, plated four more runs for a 7-1 Wolverines lead after two frames.
“We have one returning starter on the field, so this was a good start for us,” said Wiscasset coach Todd Souza. “For us to put the ball in play is key, with our goal to get one run per inning.”
Ellison found a groove, holding Lisbon to one hit through five innings.
Meanwhile, Tucker Brannon relieved Hovey and found instant results, keeping the Wolverines off the board until the fifth when Tyler Flavin singled in Matt Craig, who had reached on a single, stole second and moved to third on a wild pitch.
Entering the seventh frame, Ellison was throwing a two-hit gem, but Lisbon took advantage of the tiring hurler.
Logan McGuire singled to lead-off the seventh. Ellison retired the next two hitters, including picking up his eighth strikeout. But, an error allowed Brannon to reach, and singles by Joe Philbrick, Darren Ward and Brett Gravel (2-for-4, two RBIs) made for an 8-5 contest.
“Considering the pitch count was elevated (105 pitches), he handled things well today,” said Souza, who pulled Ellison in favor of Chandler Longfellow, who fired three pitches to record a game-ending strikeout. “Zach, you almost have to pry the ball from his hands, but he realized he had to give it up there. If he works like that, we will have a chance every time he pitches.”
“I didn’t expect to pitch that many innings, and my slider was working well along with my fastball,” said Ellison. “We were hoping to jump on these guys, and we did. Chandler looked great coming in to pick up the save.”
Ridley was pleased with his team’s seventh inning rally.
“We came back well, put up four runs, and that is the way that we have to play,” said Ridley. “We didn’t quit, didn’t stop, got some nice quality hits in the seventh inning, and showed some character with those four runs.”
Kyle Bourget played well at shortstop for Lisbon and singled (1-for-4). Hovey and Brannon combined on nine strikeouts, two walks and nine hits.
McMahon paced Wiscasset with a 2-for-4 performance at the plate.
