An open window at the home of D. M. Bates, Pine street, Lewiston, led to the discovery of the burglary of silverware and cut glass. The break was discovered Patriot’s Day and the matter was reported to the police. Mr. Bates, who is an agent of the Lewiston Bleachery and Dye Works, and Mrs. Bates are on a trip to Bermuda, so the exact amount of goods stolen is not known, but friends of the family think that only a small amount of silver and glass was taken. The house was ransacked from garret to cellar; bureau drawers were pulled open; closets were rummaged; beds were torn apart; and boxes and cupboards were gone through. It is thought that at least two persons were in the house while a third was on guard outside.
