LEWISTON — The Western Maine Central Labor Council will hold a Workers’ Memorial Day Dinner from 4 to 7:30 p.m. Sunday, April 28, at the Franco-American Heritage Center.
This annual event commemorates the continuing struggle for workers’ rights and honors workers who have died on the job. It will include a meal prepared by the students at the Green Ladle culinary arts school at the Lewiston Regional Technical Center, as well as a cash bar and raffles.
The event is open to everyone and the cost is $20 per person.
This year’s program will feature an original one-act play titled “Tribute: The Maine Mural Play,” written by Kathleen R. Harris, a teacher at Deering High School in Portland, and performed by students from that school.
“Tribute” celebrates the history of the labor movement in Maine as portrayed in the murals that were removed in 2011 from the Maine Department of Labor at the request of the governor. This play does not address the controversy surrounding the removal of these murals. Rather, it focuses on and honors the people in these murals who fought throughout Maine’s labor history for workers’ rights.
In addition to the play, the event will include the presentation of awards to individuals who continue these important efforts to protect the rights of Maine workers, and it will conclude with a ceremony honoring the more than 20 Maine workers who have died on the job during the past year.
