FARMINGTON — Area police departments are participating in Saturday’s statewide Prescription Drug Take-Back Day, held in conjunction with the Drug Enforcement Agency.

The program gives the public another opportunity to prevent pill abuse and theft by ridding their homes of potentially dangerous expired, unused and unwanted prescription drugs.

From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. April 27, residents may bring prescriptions to the following sites:

* Franklin County Sheriff’s Department, 123 County Way, Farmington

* Carrabassett Police Department, 9000 Main St., Carrabassett Valley

* Jay Police Department at Hannaford’s Supermarket, Main Street, Jay

* Livermore Falls Police Department, 2 Main St., Livermore Falls

* Rangeley Police Department, Police Station, 15 School St. Rangeley

* Wilton Police Department, 874 Main St., Wilton

Residents may dispose of medication in its original container or by removing the medication from its container and disposing of it directly into the disposal box. If an original container is submitted, the individual should remove any identifying information from the prescription label.

All solid dosage pharmaceutical products and liquids in consumer containers may be accepted. Liquid products, such as cough syrup, should remain sealed in their original container. The depositor should ensure that the cap is tightly sealed to prevent leakage.

Intravenous solutions, injectables and syringes will not be accepted due to potential hazard posed by blood-borne pathogens. Illicit substances, such as marijuana or methamphetamines, are not a part of this initiative and should not be placed in collection containers.

The service is free and anonymous, no questions asked.
