In the sand pit near the railroad track of Upper Main Street, Lewiston, officers from the Lewiston police found a broken shoe case, in which 13 pairs of shoes manufactured by G.H. Bass Co. of Wilton, and billed to the James Smith shoe store, Norway. Two pairs were found along the riverbank, making a total of 15 found. Two empty boxes were found nearby. It is believed by the police that tramps broke into a freight car on the Maine Central and carried the case into the sand pit. “The Pines,” which is near, is a favorite resort of hobos. Old clothes and cans are scattered around. Freight trains stay here for short times, especially at night.

The Minot Avenue location proposed for the ungraded school faces a Board of Appeals decision Tuesday on whether schools are permitted uses in Auburn’s industrial zone. The site chosen by the School Committee as a relocation spot for the ungraded school on Second Avenue is off Minot Avenue near the former Beal’s Laundry. If the appeal is granted, the school could be in operation by September.
