LIVERMORE FALLS — The RSU 73 board approved a $1.8 million bond anticipation note Wednesday and were told of an application for AmeriCorps volunteers to serve the district.

School directors approved the bond note, which would repay a previous one for $250,000 and ensure enough money is available for the renovation work at Spruce Mountain High School, Spruce Mountain Middle School and Jay Community Center, all in Jay. The project will allow all 500 high school students in Jay and Livermore Falls to be at one site by the start of the school year.

Superintendent Robert Wall said he and high school Principal Thomas Plourde submitted an application to the School Turnaround AmeriCorps Initiative, in partnership with several other schools, including Carrabec, Ellsworth and Portland.

The initiative would provide nine full-time AmeriCorps positions to help bring the culture of the two high schools together, and provide enrichment, support and six student tutors. If those students successfully complete the required number of tutoring hours, each would be eligible for $1,200 scholarships.

He said the district should learn whether it is successful within a couple of months.

The board accepted, with regret, the resignations of Spruce Mountain Middle School math teacher William Tronner and science teacher Sally Speich, and Jay Elementary School third-grade teacher Elaine Fitzgerald, all of whom are retiring. The resignation of high school educational technician Garret Young was also accepted.

E. James Harris Jr. was apointed junior varsity baseball coach.

Directors signed the 2013-14 school budget certification, which states the $18.58 million spending plan passed.

The next regular board meeting is May 23, because the superintendent will not be able to attend the May 9 meeting.
