LEWISTON — In a joint investigation, Lewiston and Auburn police arrested two men and charged them with multiple felonies in connection with a series of robberies in Auburn on Thursday night and Lewiston Friday morning.
According to a joint press release issued by the departments, Scott Allen Demmons, 32, of Auburn is charged with five counts of Class B robbery and Joseph P. Morris, 24, of Lewiston is charged with four counts of robbery. Each count is punishable by up to 10 years in prison and a $5,000 fine.
According to police, just before 9 p.m. Thursday, a clerk at Heathco’s Pizza on Court Street in Auburn reported a man entered the store and demanded money. He fled the store without any money when another customer entered the store.
Less than 15 minutes later, Domino’s Pizza on School Street reported a robbery. According to police, the suspect’s description was the same and the suspect got away with a small amount of cash.
On Friday, at 12:27 a.m., a man fitting the description of the suspect in the pizza shop incidents attempted to rob a City Cab driver in front of 15 Shawmut St. in Lewiston. The cab driver was able to drive away before the suspect got any money, according to police.
At 8:15 a.m., Sam’s Italian Sandwich Shop on Center Street in Auburn reported a robbery, and the suspect description was the same as the previous three incidents. A small amount of cash was also taken by the suspect, police said.
A fourth store, Elizabeth Ann’s on Sabattus Street in Lewiston reported a robbery at 9:42 a.m. Friday, and this robbery appeared to have been committed by the same person as the previous three robberies in Auburn, according to police. The suspect fled the store before getting any money.
As Lewiston police officers responded to the robbery call at Elizabeth Ann’s, officer David Levesque located a vehicle at Pine and Shawmut streets that matched the description of the vehicle in which the suspect had fled from Elizabeth Ann’s. A search of the area and interviews of witnesses led police to suspects that ran into the apartment building at 158 Pine St.
Two suspects were apprehended from that location and the suspect vehicle, a silver 2001 Mercury Sable, was impounded.
In all of the incidents, police said the suspect threatened the use of a weapon but did not display one. No one was injured.
Demmons and Morris are being held at the Androscoggin County Jail in Auburn pending bail.
Demmons has a minor criminal history of motor vehicle violations and a conviction for disorderly conduct in 2006.
In commenting on the arrest, Lewiston police Chief Michael Bussiere said, “The teamwork and cooperation between our departments is what brought this crime spree to a quick end. I especially commend LPD Officer Dave Levesque for his quick action that led investigators to the suspects at 158 Pine Street.”
Auburn Chief Phil Crowell agreed, saying “this is a prime example of how our investigators working together can bring swift results and get these dangerous criminals off the street.”
Investigators are continuing to actively investigate the incidents, according to police.
